The fan clutch helps the cooling fan function properly and helps draw in the air via the radiator. The fan clutch operates by controlling how fast the cooling fan moves, and the engine temperature.
Cooling fan clutch functionAs the engine is cool or at normal temperature, the fan clutch will slightly separate itself from the engine's radiator cooling fan. And this conserves energy because the engine does not have to drive the fan to its full potential. But suppose the engine's temperature surpasses the clutch engagement temperature setting. In that case, the engine will fully drive the fan and draw in more air through the radiator to lower the engine coolant temperature.
There are also mechanical fans that are mainly in larger vehicles and some RWD cars. It is easier to manage since the engine is installed with the belt accessory parts facing the radiator. The fan is installed on the crankshaft pulley and rotates in the middle of the radiator and draws air back through the radiator.
Common issues with a faulty cooling fan clutchA faulty cooling fan clutch can cause the engine to overheat, uncommon fan noise, and decline in engine performance.
