FAQ for Timing Cover Repair

Q: How do you remove the timing cover?
A:
You need to remove the crankshaft balancer and the water pump and drain the engine oil. Remove all the engine oil pan fasteners except the two nuts at the rear of the engine, carefully separate the engine oil pan from the engine front cover, disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wire, and remove the engine front cover and gasket.

Q: How do you install the timing cover?
A:
You need to install a new engine front cover, clean all the adhesive from the corners of the oil pan gasket where it meets the engine front cover, and apply a 5 mm (0.197 inches) wide and 25 mm (1.0 inch) long bead of adhesive, GM P/N 12346141 or equivalent, to the engine front cover to engine block junction at the oil pan sealing surfaces. Then you can install the engine oil pan, connect the CKP sensor wire and install the water pump and the crankshaft balancer.
