The proper way is to install the backing plate to the rear axle housing, install the wheel cylinder, install the 4 nuts retaining the rear axle shaft to the rear axle housing, install the drain plug to the rear axle housing, and then install the filler plug to the rear axle housing.

Q: What is the removal procedure for the backing plate?
A:
The procedure is to remove the oil filler plug from the rear axle housing, remove the rear tire and wheel assembly, remove the brake drum, remove the 4 nuts from the rear axle shaft bearing retainer studs, remove the wheel cylinder, and then remove the backing plate from the rear axle housing.
