Q: What might be the reason for the condition that allows the crankshaft position sensor to command up to 50 extra degrees of spark advance during engine cranking only?
A:
This in turn exposes the engine to higher than normal cylinder pressures which may result in an inoperative condition of the starter drive housing, the engine flywheel starter ring gear, or the engine block at the outside edge of the starter boss.

Q: What will happen after the ignition switch is turned to the CRANK position?
A:
After the ignition switch is turned to the CRANK position, the VCM must see a change in the state of the brake switch (Released to Applied) to run the learning procedure. Also, the service brakes, not the parking brake, must be held throughout the learning procedure.

Q: How to deal with the condition that allows the crankshaft position sensor to command up to 50 extra degrees of spark advance during engine cranking only?
A:
You can inspect for a stored powertrain DTC code P0338. This DTC will not illuminate the °Service Engine Soon° light. If this code is stored, the Crankshaft Position Sensor, P/N 10456607, must be replaced and the remaining components inspected for damage (engine block at the starter boss, the starter drive housing, and the engine flywheel starter ring gear).

Q: What should be noticed when I install the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor?
A:
You will need to make certain that the CKP sensor mounting surfaces are clean and free of burrs before installing the new CKP sensor. When installing the CKP sensor make sure the sensor is fully seated and held stationary in the front cover before torquing the hold-down bolt into the front cover. A CKP sensor that is not seated may result in erratic operation and lead to the setting of false codes. You should also inspect the sensor O-ring for wear, cracks, or leakage.

Q: What should be done when the learning procedure is in progress?
A:
You will need to release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine will respond to the throttle position after the learning procedure is complete.

Q: How to remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor?
A:
You may need to disconnect the negative battery cable and the CKP sensor harness connector, then remove the CKP sensor mounting bolt and the CKP sensor.
