FAQ for Exhaust Heat Shield Repair

Q: What is the service procedure for exhaust popping/snapping noise when the vehicle is hot, at idle, or immediately after the vehicle is shut off?
A:
You need to raise and support the vehicle, remove the nuts, loosen the exhaust pipe clamp, remove the exhaust hangers, pry the exhaust hangers free, replace the muffler heat shield, and reposition the muffler. Hammer flush the remaining heat shield to the muffler. You also need to install the new heat shield and three straps, cut off the excess strap material and bend the strap, remove the exhaust pipe clamp, install a new exhaust pipe clamp, and reposition the muffler. Then you need to slide the muffler forward, install the nuts and the hangers, press the exhaust pipe hangers, tighten the muffler nuts and the exhaust clamp, and lower the vehicle.
