FAQ for Brake Disc Repair

Q: What special tools will I be needing when replacing the Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout (LRO)?
A:
You will be needing a J 45101-100 conical brake rotor washer.

Q: How to burnish pads and rotors?
A:
You need to select a smooth road with little or no traffic, accelerate the vehicle to 48 km/h (30 mph), use moderate to firm pressure to apply the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop, and repeat steps 2 and 3 until approximately 20 stops have been completed, and then allow sufficient cooling periods between stops to properly burnish the brake pads and rotors.

Q: How do you install the Brake Rotor-Front?
A:
You need to install the brake rotor to the hub/axle flange. If the brake rotor was removed and installed as part of a brake system repair, you can measure the assembled lateral runout (LRO) of the brake rotor to ensure the optimum performance of the disc brakes. If the brake rotor assembled LRO measurement exceeds the specification, you need to bring the LRO to within specifications. Then you can install the brake caliper and the brake caliper bracket as an assembly to the suspension knuckle and the tire and wheel assembly. If the brake rotor was refinished or replaced, or if new brake pads were installed, you can burnish the pads and rotors.

Q: How do you remove the Brake Rotor-Rear?
A:
You need to remove the tire and wheel assembly, install a C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper, with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and the outboard disc brake pad, use the C-clamp to compress the piston into the caliper bore just enough to allow the caliper to slide away from the rotor, remove the C-clamp, the caliper bracket bolts and the brake caliper and the caliper mounting bracket as an assembly from the suspension knuckle and support the assembly with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent. Then match mark the position of the brake rotor to the wheel studs and remove the brake rotor.

Q: How do you install the Disc Brake Backing Plate-Rear?
A:
You need to install the park brake shoe and actuator onto the backing plate, position the park brake shoe, actuator, and backing plate over the rear hub, install the park brake cable bracket and the two retainers and the rear hub and install and connect the rear park brake cable to the bracket at the rear wheel, connect the park brake cable return spring to the park brake actuator and bracket at the rear wheel, and install the rear rotor, the rear caliper bracket, and the rear wheels and tires and then adjust the park brake at the equalizer.

Q: How to correct the Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral Runout (LRO)?
A:
You can use brake rotor assembled lateral runout (LRO) correction--indexing. The indexing method of correcting assembled LRO is most effective when the LRO specification is only exceeded by a relatively small amount: 0.025-0.127 mm (0.001-0.005 in). Indexing is used to achieve the best possible match of high spots to low spots between related components. The correction plate method of correcting assembled LRO involves the addition of a tapered plate between the brake rotor and the hub/axle flange. The correction plate method can be used to correct LRO that exceeds the specification by up to 0.23 mm (0.009 in). The on-vehicle brake lathe method is used to bring the LRO to within specifications by compensating for LRO while refinishing the brake rotor.

Q: Under what condition should I refinish Disc brake rotors?
A:
It can be refinished if one or more of the following conditions exist: thickness variation above the maximum allowable specification, excessive corrosion/rust and/or pitting, cracks and/or heat spots, excessive bluing discoloration or scoring of the disc brake rotor surface above the maximum allowable specification.

Q: What special tools will I be needing when refinishing Brake Rotor?

Q: How to obtain the desired non-directional finish?
A:
You need to follow the brake lathe manufacturer's recommended speed setting for applying a non-directional finish. You need to use moderate pressure to apply the non-directional finish: If the lathe is equipped with a non-directional finishing tool, you can apply the finish with 120-grit aluminum oxide sandpaper. If the lathe is not equipped with a non-directional finishing tool, you can apply the finish with a sanding block and 150-grit aluminum oxide sandpaper. After applying a non-directional finish, you can clean each friction surface of the brake rotor with denatured alcohol, or an equivalent approved brake cleaner.
