FAQ for Brake Pad Set Repair

Q: How do you install the rear disc brake pads (2500 series)?
A:
You need to install new brake pad retaining springs to the caliper bracket, and the brake pads to the caliper bracket. Install the caliper to the caliper bracket, the brake caliper bolts, and the tire and wheel assembly. With the engine off, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance. Then you can slowly release the brake pedal and wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 7-8 until a firm pedal is obtained, to properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads and then fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level with clean brake fluid and burnish the pads and rotors.

Q: How to compress the brake caliper pistons?
A:
You need to install 2 large C-clamps over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard brake pad, slowly tighten the C-clamps until the caliper pistons a pushed completely into the caliper bores and remove the C-clamps from the caliper.

Q: What is the removal procedure for the rear disc brake pads (1500 series)?
A:
You need to inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir. If the fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding. If the fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove fluid to the midway point before proceeding. Then you can raise and support the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, compress the brake caliper piston, remove the guide pin bolt from the brake caliper and rotate the brake caliper upward until it stops on the caliper mounting bracket and supports the caliper with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.

Q: How do you remove the front disc brake pads (1500 series)?
Then you can raise and support the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, compress the brake caliper pistons, remove the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt and rotate the brake caliper upward until it rests on the brake caliper mounting bracket and support with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.

Q: What is the proper way to install the rear disc brake pads (1500 series)?
A:
The proper way is to install the retaining springs on the caliper mounting bracket and the brake pads, remove the mechanics wire, rotate the brake caliper into position on the mounting bracket, and install new caliper guide pin bolts and the tire and wheel assembly. With the engine off, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance. Then you can slowly release the brake pedal, wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 8-9 until a firm pedal is obtained, to properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads, fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level with clean brake fluid and burnish the brake pads and rotors.

Q: What is the brake pad and rotor burnishing procedure?
A:
You need to select a smooth road with little or no traffic, accelerate the vehicle to 48 km/h (30 mph), apply the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop, and repeat steps 2 and 3 until approximately 20 stops have been completed and allow sufficient cooling periods between stops to properly burnish the brake pads and rotors.
