FAQ for Wheel Hub Bolt Repair

Q: What's the removal procedure for the wheel stud?
A:
The removal procedure is to raise and support the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, remove and support the brake caliper and bracket as an assembly without disconnecting the hydraulic brake hose, remove the brake rotor, rotate the bearing hub to a position where the least amount of interference between the stud and the steering knuckle exists, release the wheel stud from the bearing hub and discard the stud then loosen the wheel bearing/hub assembly retaining bolts enough to walk the bearing away slightly from the knuckle.

Q: What's the installation procedure for the wheel stud?
A:
The installation procedure is to install the NEW stud in the bearing hub, tighten the wheel bearing/hub assembly bolts, if loosened during removal, add enough washers to draw the stud into the hub, install the wheel nut with the flat side against the washers, tighten the wheel nut until the head of the wheel stud is fully seated against the back of the bearing hub flange, remove the wheel nut and the washers, install the brake rotor, and the brake caliper and bracket as an assembly, install the tire and wheel assembly then lower the vehicle.
