FAQ for Exhaust Manifold Repair

Q: How do you remove the Exhaust Manifold-Right Side?
A:
You need to remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), and the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold nuts. (1500 series shown, 2500 series similar), the front wheelhouse liner-right side, the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, the spark plug wires from the ignition coils, the oil level indicator tube from the engine block, and the exhaust manifold bolts and exhaust manifold, remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket and remove and discard the exhaust manifold seal. If replacing the exhaust manifold, remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts, and shield from the exhaust manifold.

Q: How do you install the Exhaust Manifold-Right Side?
A:
If the exhaust manifold was replaced, position and install the exhaust manifold heat shield, and bolts to the exhaust manifold. You need to clean the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts, apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) wide band of thread lock GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts, install a new catalytic converter seal to the exhaust manifold, position the new exhaust manifold gasket and exhaust manifold to the cylinder head and ensure that the catalytic converter seal is seated to the catalytic converter. Then you can install the exhaust manifold bolts, use a flat punch to bend the gasket tab at the rear of the gasket around the cylinder head edge, install the oil level indicator tube to the engine block, the spark plug wires to the spark plugs and the spark plug wires to the ignition coils and inspect the spark plug wires for proper installation.

Q: How do you remove the Exhaust Manifold-Left Side?
A:
You need to install the J 42640 into the steering column lower access hole, remove the left wheelhouse liner and the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold nuts, the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, and the spark plug wires from the ignition coils. Then you can mark the relationship of the upper intermediate steering shaft to the steering column, remove the steering shaft coupling bolt and nut from the upper intermediate steering shaft, separate the upper intermediate steering shaft from the steering column, position both shafts out of the way, remove the exhaust manifold bolts, and exhaust manifold, remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket and remove and discard the catalytic converter seal. If replacing the exhaust manifold, remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts, and shield from the exhaust manifold.
