Q: What is the Shock Absorber Disposal procedure?
A:
You need to make an indentation 10 mm (0.4 in) from the bottom of the tube using a centerpunch, clamp the shock absorber in a vise horizontally with the shock absorber rod completely extended, and drill a hole in the shock absorber at the centerpunch using a 5 mm drill bit. Gas or a gas/oil mixture will exhaust when the drill bit penetrates the shock absorber. Then you can use shop towels to contain the escaping oil, make an indentation in the middle of the tube with a center punch, and drill a second hole in the shock absorber at the center punch using a 5 mm (3/16 in) drill bit. Oil will exhaust when the drill bit penetrates the shock absorber. Then you can use shop towels to contain the escaping oil, remove the shock absorber from the vise, hold the shock absorber over a drain pan horizontally with the holes down and move the rod in and out of the tube to completely drain the oil from the shock absorber.

You need to install the shock absorber, the upper shock absorber nut and the bolt, and the lower shock absorber nut and bolt, reconnect the electronic suspension control connector and the airline, remove the support from the rear axle and lower the vehicle. If the vehicle is equipped with air leveling, perform the following: turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF, and install a scan tool. With the scan tool, operate the air compressor for 30 seconds or until the rear of the vehicle begins to rise. Then you can remove the scan tool, cycle the ignition OFF, and then back ON, with the engine ON to allow the air suspension system to regain the desired rear suspension position.

You need to assemble the front suspension strut mount, front spring upper seat, front suspension strut bumper, front spring upper insulator, and the front suspension spring in the spring compressor, align the spring seat stop, the outboard stud, and the center of the lower strut mount. The notch in the spring seat should be just to the right of the outboard stud. You can position the shock absorber in the upper retaining bracket of the CH-48845 so the shock absorber will be centered, use the CH-48845 to compress the front spring, use the appropriate size wrench to hold the shock absorber shaft, install the new shock absorber nut, remove the shock absorber assembly from the spring compressor and install the shock absorber in the vehicle.
