Q: What do we need to note when we service the heated oxygen sensor resistance learn reset?
A:
When replacing the HO2S, you should perform a code clear with a scan tool, regardless of whether or not a DTC is set, and perform HO2S heater resistance learn reset with a scan tool, where available. You should do these two steps to reset the HO2S resistance learned value and avoid possible HO2S failure.

Q: What do we need to note when we service the oxygen sensor?
A:
Contamination of the oxygen sensor can result from the use of an inappropriate RTV sealant (not oxygen sensor safe) or excessive engine coolant or oil consumption. You should remove the HO2S and visually inspect the portion of the sensor exposed to the exhaust stream to check for contamination. If contaminated, the portion of the sensor exposed to the exhaust stream will have a white powdery coating. Silicon contamination causes a high but false HO2S signal voltage (rich exhaust indication). The control module will then reduce the amount of fuel delivered to the engine, causing a severe drivability problem. You should eliminate the source of contamination before replacing the oxygen sensor.

Q: What do we need to note when we service the heated oxygen and oxygen sensor?
A:
First, you should not remove the pigtail from either the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) or the oxygen sensor (O2S) because removing the pigtail or the connector will affect sensor operation. Second, you should handle the oxygen sensor carefully and should not drop the HO2S. At the same time, you should keep the in-line electrical connector and the louvered end free of grease, dirt, or other contaminants. Otherwise, you should not use cleaning solvents of any type or repair the wiring, connector, or terminals.
