The liftgate support strut is a component with a long tube that makes a gentle hiss when the liftgate or hatch is opened. The lift support has the most durable due to the weight of the liftgate which must be supported.
Liftgate lift support importanceThe liftgate lift support is connected to the liftgate and the chassis, and the struts must be able to extend and retract without breaking. The weight of the liftgate can be excessive but the liftgate can hold the weight while balancing the liftgate, so it goes down and closes evenly. The support strut is filled with hydraulic fluid and is always trying to extend. There is also an internal pressure that pushes both rods against one another which facilitates lifting the liftgate. It is also important to note that the liftgate strut should not be too strong.
Common problems with a failing liftgate support strutA failing liftgate lift support can lead to the rods making rattling noises, and difficulty keeping the liftgate open or closing it.
