Starter Solenoids

The starter solenoid is an electromagnet that activates the starter motor of an internal combustion engine. This component can usually be found mounted to the starter motor that it controls.

Starter solenoid function

The starter solenoid has a couple of functions, the first being that it has the job to complete the circuit between the battery and starter motor so that when the ignition is engaged, the starter motor will start up. The second task of the starter solenoid is to move the starter pinion to the proper position and operates with the help of the ring gear. Nowadays, modern starters depend on the solenoid to activate the starter drive with the ring gear.

Common problems with a faulty starter solenoid

A defective solenoid can lead to the engine not starting, abnormal clicking, or loose connections.
