The GT86 was originally sold in the U.S. and Canada under the Scion Youth brand. It was named for its chassis description: a front- and rear-wheel-drive sports car. Scion used a simplified "pure price" sales model, substituting traditional factory accessories for a fixed base price and modifications through dealer-installed accessories. As a result, the FR-S was offered with a single equipment package, and the only factory options tended to be body color and gearbox. However, Scion offered a number of special limited edition models with factory options and exclusive colors. In October 2015, Scion launched the FR-S Release Series 2.0, a limited edition of 1,000 units. Due to the demise of the Scion brand, the FR-S was called the Toyota 86 in North America in August 2016. It resembles the Toyota GT 86 but with a slightly different design and badge. The Scion brand didn't last long on the market, and the FR-S can be considered the swan song of cheap Toyota. It was the cheapest of the three. The Scion FR-S was equipped with a Torsen limited-slip differential to restore rear grip. Inspired by the AE86, the Scion FR-S is designed for "pure balance." Its small dimensions and flat shape allow the engine to be mounted low and center, resulting in a dynamically advantageous front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low center of gravity, similar to that of some exotic supercars. The Scion FR-Si is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It is the result of a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. The collaboration began by combining the newly developed Subaru engine with Toyota's D-4S direct injection system, which combines direct and inline injection in each cylinder. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber and through the injection valve orifice located above the intake valves. The D-4S injection system comes from the Lexus IS F and is a new technology in the Scion family.
The energetic exterior of the Scion FR-S reflects its inner strength. Inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, the profile features an extremely low and narrow hood and roof. It gives the car an aerodynamic shape that pushes air upward. The low height makes the intimidating bodywork even more intimidating, with clean lines, a wide lower air intake, and diagonal headlights with projector halogen lamps. The aggressive front bumper rises and carries the iconic 86 badge. It highlights both the AE86's heritage and its unique new boxer engine. At the rear, a low, wide, aerodynamic lower section surrounds the tailpipes of the dual sports.
