Q: What should be done if contaminated?
A:
If contaminated, the portion of the sensor exposed to the exhaust stream will have a white powdery coating. Silicon contamination causes a high but false HO2S signal voltage (rich exhaust indication). The control module will then reduce the amount of fuel delivered to the engine, causing a severe driveability problem. So you will need to eliminate the source of contamination before replacing the oxygen sensor.

You will need to remove the air deflector and the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer, then disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), remove the HO2S clip from the engine bracket, then remove the HO2S.

A:
You will need to ensure that code is clear with a scan tool, regardless of whether or not a DTC is set, and HO2S heater resistance learns reset with a scan tool, where available. You should perform the above to reset the HO2S resistance learned the value and avoid possible HO2S failure.

You may need to coat the threads with anti-seize compound, GM P/N 12377953 or equivalent if reusing the old HO2S, then install the HO2S and tighten the sensor to 41 N.m (30 lb-ft), then connect the engine harness electrical connector to the HO2S, finally install the oxygen sensor wiring harness heat shield.

02/11/2022Q: How to remove the Heated Oxygen Sensor-Bank 1 Sensor 1?
A:
You will need to remove the fuel injector sight shield, remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer, disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S), then remove the HO2S clip from the secondary air injection (AIR) check valve hose bracket, raise and support the vehicle, support the rear of the frame with a tall screw type jack, remove the 4 rearward frame to body bolts (left side shown, right side similar), lower the screw type jack approximately 4 cm (1.5 in) but not more than 76 mm (3 inches), allowing the rear of the frame to lower then remove the HO2S.
