Q: How to install the Steering Gear Boot and Breather Tube-Off Vehicle?
A:
You may need to install the new boot clamp, apply grease to the inner tie rod assembly and the rack and pinion gear assembly then install the rack and pinion boot, install the breather tube, then install the rack and pinion boot onto the gear assembly until the rack and pinion boot is seated in the gear assembly groove, install the boot clamp on the rack and pinion boot with J 22610, crimp the boot clamp, then install the tie rod end clamp onto the rack and pinion boot.

Q: How to adjust the Steering Gear Rack Bearing Preload-Off Vehicle (Magnasteer)?
A:
You may need to loosen the adjuster plug lock nut, turn the adjuster plug clockwise until the adjuster plug bottoms in the gear assembly, turn the adjuster plug back 50 degrees to 70 degrees (approximately one flat), install the adjuster plug lock nut to the adjuster plug, and hold the adjuster plug stationary while tightening the adjuster plug lock nut to 68 N.m (50 lb-ft).

A:
You will need to inspect the inner tie rod for evidence of corrosion or contamination. If none is evident, continue with the repair. If corrosion or contamination is evident, replace the steering gear.

Q: How to remove the Steering Gear Boot and Breather Tube-Off Vehicle?
A:
You will need to remove the outer tie rod, remove the hexagon jam nut from the inner tie rod assembly, remove the tie rod end clamp from the rack and pinion boot, remove the boot clamp from the rack and pinion boot with side cutters, then remove the rack and pinion boot and the breather tube, if present, from the rack and pinion gear assembly.
