The 4WD actuator is an important part of the vehicle because it locks the differentials together. The 4WD mode can be activated with a push of a button or by a switch.

4WD actuator essence

The 4x4 actuator is an electronic device that engages the front differential on a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Not all vehicles that are four-wheel-drive use that type of switch, but the vehicle that does will have a switch on the vehicle's dash to activate the setting. Other vehicles require that the user pull a shift lever to engage the front axle. The lever can be located on the vehicle's floorboard.

There are also part-time 4WD systems that are usually on trucks or SUVs and are made to operate in 2WD while on the dry pavement but can engage the 4WD drive mode when the terrain has changed drastically.

Common issues with a 4WD actuator

The 4WD actuators are exposed to a harsh environment including being exposed to dirt, debris, and other fluids which can cause the axle to fail to engage or get stuck in the 4WD.
