The ignition switch is a crucial part of the vehicle's ignition and charging system. When turning on the ignition switch (with a key, button, or controller) a signal is sent to the computer to activate the systems and start up the engine.
Ignition switch principleModern-day vehicles come equipped with a keyless entry or push-to-start system. These features allow the user for easier access without a key or the risk of locking themselves out. An additional feature is the start/stop system which shuts off the engine to save fuel. The ignition switch allows for these features since it is a system that activates the electrical system.
The switch generates power to the starter solenoid and components such as the engine control unit and the ignition coil. To achieve the generated power a proper key is needed for the ignition switches in older vehicles.
Common issues with a bad ignition switchA bad ignition switch can lead to an engine that won't start, stalling, and difficulty turning the key.
