A universal joint is a vital part that links the driveshaft as well as the differential. It helps secure the driveshaft which can move horizontally allowing the vehicle to move correctly.
Universal joint conceptThe joint is bolted and welded on a shaft which allows for a rotation of the shaft. U-joints, allow the driveshaft to move as it transfers power to the axle. The component is necessary to neutralize the change in angle between the parts. And the U-joint is part of the front and rear of the driveshaft.
Typically the U-joint is composed of a cross, trunnion, with needle bearings in hardened steel cups at each arm, and the cups are pushed into the bores in the driveshaft and yoke. To retain the cups, clips are fitted into the groves of each bore.
Common issues with a faulty universal jointA faulty universal joint can lead to loud clunking noises when shifting from one gear to another, vibrations when accelerating, and loud banging.
